Topics & Speakers

1p           Brain Development & Criminal Law (Keith Grant)

Brains aren’t “done” until roughly age 25 – until then decision making is that of a “child”.
An analysis of how criminal justice should take that into account using examples from Making a Murderer and the “Slenderman Case”

2p           Triple S Hearings and Traffic Law  (Joe Fusz & Hon. Chuck Johnson)

Recent caselaw has changed the practice when summary suspensions are involved, this program will analyze the state of the law and recommend best practices for practitioners on both sides.

3p           Investigations Panel  (APD Gabe Conroe; Inv David Asma; ASA Fred Day; SAO Investigator TBD; Dan Hodgkinson)

How to formulate a successful investigation strategy and how to effectively collaborate with an investigator.  Hint:  There’s more to it than just saying “Go see what you can find out”.  Examination of the complexities of investigating when smartphones and the internet are involved.  Will also address the ethics of investigating – how to find the truth without changing it.

4p           Juvenile Law Update  (APD John Bailey)

There have been significant changes in juvenile law that can change the outcome of a case.  The Supervisor of the Public Defender’s Juvenile Delinquency Division will review these changes and analyze how to incorporate them into practice.

Friday

8a           Something Law Related (ASA Ari Fisz)

There’s a lot of law out there – The SAO Felony Chief will talk about some of it

8:45a     Implicit Bias   (Peter Anderson, Wisconsin Public Defender, Training Division)

Even when we aren’t trying, humans have opinions and attitudes towards others.  This presentation will explore positive or negative attitudes towards people or groups held at an unconscious level and examine how those biases affect decision-making.  Will suggest strategies to address bias in others as well as in yourself.

10:15a   Expert Testimony   (Robert Deters)

Examines the differences between “hard” and “soft” science expertise and how to present both kinds to a fact finder.  Discussion of admissibility and recent changes indicating that some “soft” expertise (false confession & eyewitness identification, for example) is now considered both relevant and helpful for the fact finder.

11a         Caselaw Update   (Keith Grant)

An in depth and detailed analysis of every single Illinois criminal case from the past year – all in 60 minutes.
