Most volunteers with the VLP agree to handle cases referrals. These volunteers accept one, two or more pro bono cases each year. Cases are screened by Prairie State staff and all clients meet Prairie State’s income eligibility guidelines. Some cases are referred to volunteers for advice only but most cases are referred to volunteers for more in?depth representation. The areas of the greatest client need are family law (especially divorce in domestic violence cases), Chapter 7 bankruptcy cases for working clients, uncontested guardianships for disabled adults and consumer law, including security deposit returns and debt collection.
The VLP offers malpractice coverage, training and mentoring to help new volunteers with their VLP cases. Funds are available to cover out of pocket costs such as witness subpoenas and depositions. The VLP is committed to making the volunteer experience a positive one for both the volunteer attorney and the VLP client. For more information or to join the VLP, contact Susan Perlman at (847) 662?6925 ext. 5612 or write to her at
